The emotional developmental channel refers to the trust that evolves between the teacher and the learner

In the classroom, the emotional developmental channel refers to the trust that evolves between the teacher and the learner, the degree of security the learner feels about oneself and the degree of security the learner feels during interaction with others.

The attributes we choose to guide our conduct on the emotional channel influences our actions in each of the other developmental channels. Each channel offers an additional set of principles that serve to guide our actions.

The emotional channel establishes a set of principles that serve to influence our actions and behavior on all the channels.  The emotional channel is strongly influenced by the ethical/moral channel.

The following list is a random selection of attributes that various teachers have infused into the classroom.

Emotional

All attributes in the emotional channel rely on mood management. The essence of this channel is expressing, understanding, and controlling feelings.

Develop Ability to:

  • Manage moods and control impulses
  • Handle disappointments and rejection
  • Be motivated
  • Be tenacious
  • Have passion for what one does
  • Set goals
  • Be curious
  • Make a positive difference
  • Ask questions
  • Exercise tolerance or acceptance of the feelings of others
  • Acknowledge that others have the same rights as you
  • Exhibit
    • Integrity
    • Self-reliance
    • Dependability
    • Social caring and giving
  • Trust in oneself to:
    • Develop refusal skills
    • Accept responsibility for role in events/ consequences of emotional actions
    • Apologize
    • Learn to feel comfortable changing your mind

Avoid:

  • Prejudice
  • Intimidation and control behaviors
  • Emotional provocation and outbursts
  • Completely surrendering one’s sense of self and personhood
