As a faculty member in an undergraduate Physical Education Teacher Education program, I’ve been long responsible for a course in which the Spectrum is taught. I always wondered if any of my students would use the Spectrum in their teaching as I rarely saw a variety of styles in my school visits. That sparked an initial investigation of student experience with the styles which was admittedly done with college students as a convenient sample. I had no idea that initial study (Cothran, Kulinna, & Ward, 2000) would spawn a series of publications and a book chapter. The Spectrum continues to interest me at both theoretical and practical levels because of its flexibility, utility, and widespread influence on the field.
